For almost a year I had a plan to build a creative space for freelancers. Then I found that this crazy idea had actually been given a name and had been a growing trend for several years.
Coworking.
I am excited to announce that in the near future we will be developing a coworking space in Salt Lake City (or thereabouts.) It will also house full video studio space & have podcasting necessities. I'm open to any other ideas for this new creative space. It will be a fantastic place for networking, community workshops, playing, growing and working. I will keep you posted. The working name for this space is
"Montage Coworking Studios"

COWORKING IS, “…the social gathering of a group of people, who are still working independently, but are interested in the synergy that can happen from working with talented people in the same space.” (The all-knowing Wikipedia, 2008)
"Where coffee shop meets cubicle" - Newsweek
“Co-working facilities blend the appeal of an independent environment with many of the
advantages of the traditional office” - Business Week
“Shared workspaces a wave of the future” - San Francisco Chronicle
“Coworking is about providing affordable, open, collaborative spaces for people as an alternative to working from home or from noisy coffee shops. It’s really tied to the nomadic worker who is part of a growing movement of people who don’t have traditional offices to go to, but want to work in an environment with other people. It’s like an artistic collective with a technology twist.” (Tara Hunt aka @Missrogue aka The Queen of Coworking)
That's the short answer for what is 'coworking.' There are prbly 60+ in the Nation and over 15 outside the US. Stay tuned for more information about Salt Lake' (or thereabouts) newest Coworking facility.

Drew,
Thanks for the Twitter follow. Good luck with this! I've had a similar idea in the past but backwards. Basically a place where corporations would "lease" cube space for remote employees. With residential broadband and such, it seemed like a dated idea now. However, your discovery of just harnessing the synergy of the place is awesome.
I'm hoping to make the lunch on Thursday. I've been enchanted with the Co-Working idea for months now and hoped to put one together in Park City where I used to work (we had extra space in our small office that just sat there, empty)
Although I work from a very cozy and nice home office in Kamas, I am in SLC at least once a week. Good work on this, I love to see this get off the ground.
